The Smithsonian Photo Contest is organized annually by the Smithsonian Institution – a group of research institutes and museums directly run by the U.S. government – with a mission "to enhance and disseminate knowledge." This year, approximately 48,000 images were submitted from 155 countries and territories. Among them, two outstanding entries from Vietnam were selected among the top photographs.

"Making Incense" – a photograph by Tran Tuan Viet – won the Travel photography category.The photo was taken at Quang Phu Cau, Ung Hoa, Hanoi.
In Buddhist countries like Vietnam, incense is an indispensable part of traditional festivals and religious ceremonies.

Another photograph taken in Vietnam is by photographer Thong Huu. He says: 'In Northern Vietnam, people often go to the market to buy food every day. They usually wake up very early to go to the market and have breakfast there.'

Oreon Strusinski was the winner in the World Nature photography category with his image of a wave in Malibu, California. He said, “A source of energy travels hundreds of miles across the ocean and ends dramatically when it reaches the shore.”

The Readers' Choice Award winner was Sara Jacoby, with her photograph titled "Rare," which she took in Oklahoma. She said, "This is Maggie. She has two rare chromosomal duplicates, and it's the only documented case."

The photograph "Rain," which won the People category, was taken in the nomadic Babanam region (Shiraz city, Iran) by Seyed Mohammad Sadegh Hosseini.

The winner in the revised image category was Adam Zadlo with his photograph of sheep in Poland. “Not many animals produce as much as sheep; they give humans wool, milk, and meat…”
