Spaghetti alla carbonara (carbonara for short), an Italian culinary masterpiece hand-made with the freshest ingredients, will now be available in convenient tin cans on UK shelves.
According to the Telegraph, carbonara - a traditional pasta originating from Rome cooked with eggs, cheese, bacon, and pepper, packaged in a tin can will officially appear on shelves in the UK from September. This product is expected to meet the needs of fast, convenient food of young consumers, while bringing authentic Italian flavor to every home, but also creating a lot of controversy.
As soon as news of Heinz's canned carbonara noodles hit the market, the Italian culinary community went crazy.
American food company Heinz said each can of the product will include a portion of spaghetti with pancetta (Italian bacon) and signature cheese sauce.
This is also the first canned pasta product that Heinz has launched in the UK market in more than a decade. According to a Heinz representative, the idea of canning carbonara is to attract young consumers who always want to eat quickly, conveniently and prioritize convenience.
Traditional dishes that are strictly preserved suddenly become the focus of heated debates.
Despite meeting the convenience needs of modern life, however, carbonara pasta, a symbol of Italian cuisine, being "locked" in a tin can has made many people in this country extremely angry. They believe that commercializing a traditional dish, where each strand of pasta is meticulously seasoned and harmoniously combined with eggs, cheese and bacon in such a crude way, is an insult to Italian culinary culture, where each dish has its own story and soul.
Michelin-starred chef Cristina Bowerman, owner of a renowned restaurant in Rome, has expressed her disapproval of canned carbonara, saying the traditional dish should not be packaged in tins. “I am completely against this product. It is a hybrid,” Bowerman told the Telegraph.
Carbonara pasta is the pride of Italian cuisine.
For carbonara, the preparation is even more important because this dish includes egg yolks mixed with parmesan cheese and hot spaghetti, instead of cooking directly on the stove like other types of Italian pasta.
Italians believe that they have preserved their traditional cooking secrets for generations. Each dish is a work of art, created with the freshest ingredients and the dedication of the chef. The mass production and lack of artistry of packaging carbonara in a tin can is completely contrary to the culinary spirit of the country. They believe that this product will not conquer the refined palate of Italians.
