From a student market to one of Taiwan's most famous night markets.

Around 7 PM, as traffic on the avenues thins out after rush hour, the hustle and bustle truly begins at Fengjia Night Market. Located in Xitun District, the market is situated around the campus of Fengjia University, one of Taichung's major universities.

The food court in the market was packed with people in the evening.

In the 1960s, this place was just a few small food stalls serving students. Over time, the number of people passing through increased, and stalls sprang up one after another along Wenhua, Fengjia, and Fuxing streets. From a simple corner market, Fengjia gradually developed into the largest night market in Taichung and one of Taiwan's most famous night markets.

Street food flavors are what make the night market famous.

Unlike many traditional markets that are planned within a fixed area, Phung Giap Night Market stretches across numerous streets and interwoven alleyways. The experience of strolling through the market is like entering a labyrinth of food and shopping, where each alleyway reveals a new surprise.

Along both sides of the street, stalls line up in long rows under the bright neon signs. Smoke rises from hot pans, and the aroma of grilled and fried food wafts along the street, drawing shoppers through every small alleyway.

Amidst the rows of beverage stalls, the bright yellow sign of the 50 Lan bubble tea brand stands out from afar. This bubble tea chain, established in 1994, now boasts over 600 stores across Taiwan. Bubble tea with two sizes of chewy tapioca pearls, rich in brown sugar flavor, is continuously prepared behind the counter. In the bustling market, it's not uncommon to see customers holding these distinctive lemon-yellow cups.

A few steps away is a stall selling grilled sausage wrapped in sticky rice – a dish originally called Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang, often referred to as "Taiwanese-style hot dogs." A grilled pork sausage is sandwiched in a layer of sticky rice and then grilled until cooked. When you bite into it, the sticky rice is slightly crispy on the outside, while the inside remains soft and chewy, blending with the salty flavor and rich fat of the sausage.

Stinky tofu – one of the most intriguing street food dishes in Taiwan – is also found at many stalls in Fengjia Night Market. These fermented tofu blocks, with their distinctive smell, are prepared in various ways, from deep-fried to cooked in a spicy broth. When served with pickled vegetables and chili sauce, the strong flavor of this dish is balanced, making it both intriguing and a must-try for many tourists visiting the night market.

Besides the familiar dishes, Phung Giap Market is also famous for its creative snacks: giant crispy fried chicken pieces, cheese-covered baked potatoes, hot grilled snails and seafood, as well as various pastries, rolled ice cream, and fresh fruit juices.

At many stalls, food is prepared right in front of the customers. The oil sizzles, smoke rises in bursts, and the aroma spreads along the street. Therefore, strolling through Fengjia Market is like a culinary adventure. Each stall offers its own unique flavor, contributing to the rich tapestry of Taiwanese street food.

Venturing deeper into the narrow alleys, visitors will also encounter numerous street game areas. From simple games like ball shooting and ring tossing to machine-based games like pachinko, gacha, and claw crane games, these always attract large crowds.

The creativity of the stalls also adds a unique charm to the market. One beverage shop is designed like a miniature gas station, where the "pump" is actually a dispensing tap. Other shops are decorated in cartoon or retro styles, with colorful signs and whimsical decorations.
