Quang Nam organized the National Tourism Year in March 2022 with the theme "Green Tourism Destination".

The Quang Nam provincial government has agreed to host the National Tourism Year 2022 with the theme..."Quang Nam - A green tourism destination"The opening ceremony is scheduled for March 25, 2022 in Hoi An city, and the closing ceremony will be held at the end of December 2022 in Thang Binh district.

Tourism is known to be a key economic sector, providing the main source of income for Quang Nam province. However, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of tourists visiting the locality has decreased sharply, the streets are deserted, businesses are struggling, and especially accommodation establishments have ceased operations. Recognizing the possibility that the pandemic will continue for an extended period, Quang Nam is shifting its tourism market towards green and environmentally friendly tourism, committing to participating in and facilitating waste reduction efforts.

“Green tourism is key for Quang Nam to follow a responsible tourism model, ensuring sustainable development in the future. From there, the locality can grasp trends, exploit new, diverse, attractive locations that suit the needs of the tourist market,” said Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh, Chairman of the Quang Nam Tourism Association.

Currently, besides the famous Hoi An ancient town and My Son temple complex, Quang Nam province also has Cham Island, which has been "saying no to plastic bags" since 2009 and is also the first locality in the country to commit to saying no to plastic straws. Residents and traders on the island use environmentally friendly materials such as paper bags, mesh bags, and baskets for shopping; they use leaves such as banana leaves, taro leaves, and Terminalia leaves, which are found on the island, to wrap goods instead of plastic bags. Plastic waste washed ashore by the water is collected, sorted, and recycled weekly by the local authorities.

In recent years, Cu Lao Cham has attracted a large number of tourists, especially international visitors, due to its eco-friendly development. Most of the local population, who previously worked in fishing and seafood harvesting, have now transitioned to tourism and service industries on the island, earning one of the highest per capita incomes in rural Quang Nam province. Furthermore, those who previously worked in fishing have moved to other waters to create favorable conditions for sea turtles to lay their eggs.

In addition, the province also has other emerging green destinations such as An Nhien Farm, Kybimo Garden, Heal Organic Farm, Bay Mau Coconut Forest, and vegetable gardens in Tra Que, Thanh Dong, An My, etc., all implementing various activities to protect nature, reduce environmental waste, and aim for common sustainable development goals.

According to the green tourism development plan until 2025, Quang Nam province aims to attract 12 million overnight visitors, achieve 26 trillion VND in tourism revenue, and create 23,000 tourism jobs. Each year, at least one model tourism project will be developed according to the green tourism criteria; by 2025, approximately 10-20 green tourism models will be established.
