The vibrant tulip festival in the Netherlands

23/01/2014

This year, the tulip festival – one of the biggest events of the year in the "land of windmills" – will take place from March 20th to May 18th at the famous Keukenhof gardens in Lisse, on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

This year's Keukenhof festival, themed "Netherlands," features an exhibition on the history and cultivation of tulips. At this year's festival, you'll have the opportunity to learn the stories behind the tulips, a flower that the Dutch people are so proud of. In addition, the festival boasts vibrant and creative flower gardens, meticulously manicured to depict symbols of the Netherlands, creating a beautiful miniature city of flowers, along with over 60,000 tulip-shaped lights decorating the gardens…

The town of Lisse has been the largest flower-growing area in the Netherlands since the Middle Ages, but it only became known to the world in 1949 when the tulip garden was created and the mayor of Lisse opened a flower exhibition bringing together the country's largest flower growers and others from around the world. Today, Keukenhof is the world's largest flower garden, covering 32 hectares and featuring 4.5 million tulips of 100 different varieties. In addition, the park also grows 2,500 other flowering plants. In total, there are 7 million flowering plants of 1,600 different varieties grown there.
