China's first dedicated pet lounge has officially opened in the domestic cargo terminal at Shenzhen Airport.

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport has officially launched a dedicated pet lounge in its domestic cargo terminal, marking a new step in enhancing professional and friendly pet transportation services.

Additionally, the lounge offers accompanying services such as booking airline tickets, handling paperwork for pets, and allowing passengers to monitor their pets' status online while waiting.

The general manager of the domestic cargo terminal at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport said the airport has also implemented a separate security check area and boarding corridor for pets. In case pets are stranded or their flights are delayed, the airport will provide free pet care and food.

Building pet-friendly cities

According to the Global Times, this is part of the city government's efforts to transform Shenzhen into a pet-friendly city – a place where both pet owners and animal lovers feel comfortable and can easily fit in.

In 2022, Shenzhen became the first city in China to ban the consumption of dogs and cats. That same year, the city also launched the "Shenzhen Dog Adoption Service" initiative to standardize urban pet management and allow the adoption of stray dogs.

In addition, Shenzhen has more than 50 pet-friendly shopping malls. These malls offer specialized services such as pet elevators, stroller rentals, play areas, and pet-specific restrooms.
