The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) advises Singaporeans currently in or traveling to Malaysia to exercise caution and take all necessary precautions to ensure their personal safety.
The Ministry of Finance (MFA) stated that Singapore strongly condemns the attack carried out by a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group in the early morning of May 17th at the Ulu Tiram police station in the suburbs of Johor Bahru (Malaysia), which killed two police officers and injured another. The attacker was killed in a subsequent shootout. The suburban town of Ulu Tiram is located about 20 km from Johor Bahru, near Mount Austin, a popular shopping destination for Singaporeans.
The MFA stated that security in Malaysia remains under control, but Singaporean citizens should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their own safety.
Malaysia is becoming more dangerous following the recent terrorist attack.
Singaporean citizens traveling to Malaysia should always stay updated on the local security situation. They can refer to the MFA Singapore website or the Singapore Embassy in Malaysia for more information. They should avoid remote or sparsely populated areas, and remember to always carry a copy of their passport and other important documents.
The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said it is closely monitoring the situation in Johor Bahru and advised Singaporeans traveling to Malaysia to register online through the MFA website so that the agency can contact and assist in case of emergency. The MFA also encouraged all citizens traveling abroad to purchase comprehensive health and travel insurance.
