Tel Aviv becomes a UNESCO Creative City.

02/12/2014

Tel Aviv, the White City, with its Bauhaus-style architecture, was once recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In December 2014, the city was further honored as a UNESCO Creative City in the Media Arts category.

The areas in which Tel Aviv was honored include cities characterized by the existence of creative industries and cultural activities, fostered through the use of digital technology and media arts for the benefit of improving urban life.

All these characteristics are assessed through the accessibility of cultural events and products thanks to digital technology and other electronic art forms – the integration of these art forms in civil society and their ability to enhance media art projects.

Being included in the Creative Cities Network is a tremendous opportunity for Tel Aviv to further develop its activities, projects, and initiatives in the field of culture and media arts.

Tel Aviv-Yafo Mayor Ron Huldai said that Tel Aviv's recognition demonstrates the world's acknowledgment of the city's contributions to the present and future – recognizing Tel Aviv as a vibrant center of innovative cultural and technological activities, creative industries, and more.

In addition to the field of media arts, UNESCO also honored cities in six other creative fields such as literature, film, music, crafts and folk arts, design, and gastronomy.
