Despite being a famous seaside town in Italy, according to the mayor of Sorrento, tourists who dress immodestly can face hefty fines for affecting the "quality of life" of the residents.

In a recently published statement, tourists wearing revealing swimwear risk fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros. The ban also applies to those who go topless.

According to Massimo Coppola, the mayor of Sorrento, this is one of the local government's efforts to reduce anxiety and discomfort for both Sorrento residents and tourists.

"We want to prevent indecent behavior. In this way, the quality of life and the landscape of the city center and public spaces will be protected and improved," said Mr. Coppola.

The town of Sorrento is located south of Naples, on the west coast of Italy.

Sorrento is a town located on the Sorrentine Peninsula, with the impressive Amalfi Coast stretching south. This summer, it has attracted a huge number of tourists from all over the world. The sheer volume of visitors has even forced local authorities to introduce new regulations to reduce the influx of people to coastal areas.

From mid-June, a system of signs announced that only cars are allowed to travel on the popular stretch of road between Vietri sul Mare and Positano every other day during peak season.

Vehicles with odd-numbered license plates will be allowed to circulate on odd-numbered days, and vehicles with even-numbered license plates on even-numbered days. This applies from 10 AM to 6 PM throughout August, plus weekends from June 15th to September 30th, or Holy Week surrounding Easter.
