In 2019, Waseda University announced it would build a library to serve its students and literature enthusiasts. This space, also known as the Haruki Murakami Library, aims to honor the books of this renowned Japanese author.
Haruki Murakami is an alumnus of Waseda University, where he studied drama. It is also where he met his wife, Yoko Murakami.
The Haruki Murakami Library is located on the campus of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.
In a 2018 press conference, Murakami shared his desire to open a library named after him at the school. He announced that he would donate his manuscripts, resources, and music CDs once the library was established. He even joked that many names had been suggested for the library, including the Haruki Murakami Memorial Museum, but they forgot that he was still alive.
This open-air library was renovated from building number 4 of the university, which used to be the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum. Murakami frequently visited it during his student years. The Murakami Library was designed by architect Kengo Kuma, a professor at the University of Tokyo and the designer of the stadium for the upcoming Tokyo Summer Olympics. Kuma hopes that this library will become a familiar destination for anyone, including Haruki Murakami himself, to discuss literature (not only Japanese but also world literature).
