Italians have a common perception that immigrants, who make up 70% of the population, bring a lot of negative things - this is the result of media and articles that describe immigration as an "alien" invasion. However, the reality is that immigrants have contributed a lot to Italy, and they are willing to tell Italians about their migration stories and their contributions. From that idea, Migrantour (tours led by immigrants) was formed.
Migrantour is gradually erasing the prejudice of Italian people towards immigrants.
The average price for these tours is around $12 and there are currently more than 150 migrants working as Migrantour guides on a freelance basis. Tour participants are sometimes mistaken for tourists, but are actually locals.
The tour guide showed the Italians the great contribution of immigrants to their home city.
“The aim of the tour is to highlight the impact that foreign communities have had on the region over the centuries,” says Rosina Chiurazzi, coordinator of Migrantour in Turin and a tour guide. “Italy needs to see immigrants as locals, rather than just seeing them as different,” she says.
A tour led by immigrants in Naples
Immigrants in Italy have long been subject to prejudice from local people. They are associated with images of thieves, prostitutes or maids, even though they simply want to sacrifice everything for a better future for their children.
Therefore, through tours led by immigrants, local people can have the opportunity to get closer to immigrants and understand the difficulties of having no other choice but to leave their families, leave their country for greater purposes, understand the pain that lucky people often do not know... From there, Italian people can realize the truth that human mobility is part of the social structure and immigration is always a normal necessity.
