Craig Thomas Gallery presents "Slices," a solo exhibition by Hanoi artist Ngo Van Sac, featuring wood burning and acrylic on wood paintings. The opening party will take place at CTG Tran Nhat Duat from 6-9 PM on November 17, 2017.

In his third solo exhibition at CTG, Ngo Van Sac returns with the unique image of wood burning art that he has been pursuing, following his previous exhibition.OppositePaper collage, acrylic on canvas, 2015. WithSliceSắc continued to develop his wood-burning technique, while also incorporating writing and acrylic paint into his paintings through a shift in subject matter from self-portraits to focusing on portraits of ethnic minorities in Vietnam. Sắc maintained his painting method, demonstrating mastery of the materials; and his experiments yielded inspiring results.

Regarding the origins of his wood-burning paintings, Sac said: “Ever since my art student days, I’ve always enjoyed exploring different materials. Sometimes, after a period of creation, I would display my works to admire them, then gather the ones I didn’t like and burn them. While burning those works, including woodblock prints, I noticed that the process of fire destroying the works inadvertently created a new work. When I use gas to create natural colors on the wood for my works, I also make full use of the wood grain to form the characters in my paintings. Natural life, the natural wood grain of creation, always gives me surprising excitement during the creative process.”

Pyrography is one of the oldest art forms known to humankind, but under the skillful hands of Sắc, it has been revitalized and given new life. The artist first sketches the main outlines onto the wood surface, then uses a blowtorch to create more detailed shapes. Regarding his unique approach, Sắc says: “After a creative process, I tried searching on Google and was happy to find out that I am the only one doing it this way; no one else has ever used this technique. If they do use fire on wood, their method is completely different from mine. They use wire or metal rods, heat them up, and then draw on the wood. I don't like that method; I prefer to make the most of the stories and unique natural life of each wood grain in my artwork.”
