In this third solo exhibition at CTG, Ngo Van Sac returns to the unique image of wood burning paintings that he has pursued, following the exhibitionOpposite2015 acrylic on canvas. WithSliceSac continued to develop the wood burning method, adding calligraphy and acrylic paint to his paintings through a change in subject matter from self-portrait to a focus on portrayal of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities. Sac maintained the same painting method, demonstrating mastery of the material; and his experiments yielded exciting results.
Regarding the origin of his wood burning paintings, Sac said: “Ever since I was an art student, I have always loved to explore materials. Sometimes after a period of creation, I often display my works to look at again, then collect the ones I do not like to burn. While burning those works, including wood carvings, I realized that the process of fire destroying the works, at the same time accidentally created a new work. When I use gas to create natural colors on the wood for the work, I also make full use of the wood grain to form the characters in my paintings. The natural life, the natural wood grain of creation always gives me unexpected excitement during the creation process.”
Pyrography is one of the oldest art forms of mankind, but in Sac's hands, it has been renewed and revitalized. The artist first sketches the main lines on the wood surface, then uses a blowtorch to create more detailed shapes. Regarding his special approach, Sac said: "After a creative process, I tried to search on Google and was happy because I was the only one doing it this way, no one had that technique. If there was fire on wood, their way is completely different from mine. They use wire or metal rods, heat it up and then draw on the wood. I don't like that way, I like to make the most of the stories, the natural life of each wood grain for my work."
Ngo Van Sac lives and works in Hanoi. He has had many group and solo exhibitions in Vietnam and abroad.Sliceis his third solo exhibition at Craig Thomas Gallery.
