Reindeer in Norway die from lack of food

29/07/2019

Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that researchers have discovered more than 200 reindeer dead of starvation in the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic region of Norway.

According to researcher Ashild Onvik Pedersen, heavy rains in Svalbard in December 2018 made it difficult for animals to find food. Reindeer usually graze everywhere in Svalbard and in winter they often dig for food in the tundra, they can dig through snow but cannot dig through ice.

Researcher Pedersen also said that such a large number of reindeer died due to lack of food shows that climate warming has had a strong impact on wildlife in the area, even though these areas are far from residential areas and have hardly ever been directly affected by human hands.

Reindeer are herbivores in the Arctic. If they disappeared, stopped foraging, stopped trampling the grasslands and stopped fertilizing the surrounding areas, the landscape would be completely changed.

Climate change not only affects the lives of reindeer but also many other animals such as bears, seals... in the Svalbard archipelago. The numbers of these animals have seriously decreased due to starvation or difficulty in finding food.
