In recent days, temperatures in Brazil have dropped sharply, with some places seeing temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. The cause is the polar air mass moving towards the south and center of the country.
Snowfall of up to 1 meter was recorded in 33 cities in the southern part of Rio Grande do Sul state. People in the area were extremely excited about this unusual weather phenomenon.
"I'm 62 years old and I've never seen snow. To see the beauty of nature is something indescribable," truck driver Iodor Goncalves Marques in Cambara do Sul told TV Globo.
In contrast to the joyful mood of urban residents, farmers on coffee and vegetable plantations are worried that extreme weather will damage their crops.
On July 29, southern Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul, states that grow crops such as corn, will face low temperatures as the cold front moves north, according to the weather consultancy Rural Clima. July 30 is forecast to be the coldest day of the year.
Extreme weather events are damaging coffee and flower gardens.
Polar air masses will move over Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, sugar, citrus and coffee producing regions, on July 30 with freezing temperatures.
According to the MetSul meteorological company, winds in the city of Sao Francisco de Paula reached a maximum of 80km/h, which is rare in Brazil.
