The youthful energy and boldness of young people, as well as their desire to express their individuality, are gradually changing wedding trends. From lavish weddings with hundreds of tables and thousands of guests, weddings now tend to be more minimalist, focusing on emotions, connection, and personalization.
Weddings for young couples are increasingly tending to be more personal.
Travellive had a conversation with Ms. Huyen Trang - Founder of Thuyen Giay Wedding & Event Planner.
PV: Hello Ms. Huyen Trang. In your opinion, what are the differences in terms of factors such as time, method, cost, needs, and preferences between traditional and modern weddings?
Founder Huyen TrangTraditional weddings are often seen as a way to fulfill family obligations. The wedding takes place in the presence of both families and relatives. It's also an opportunity to meet and chat with many people, not only the bride and groom but also their parents.
Perhaps that's why traditional weddings often feature more of a celebratory reception and a feast for everyone to share in the joy. Weddings with hundreds of tables of food and thousands of guests seem to create a barrier, preventing the bride and groom from fully connecting and sharing with everyone. Therefore, many young couples today often hold their wedding ceremony elsewhere, followed by a traditional wedding ceremony in their hometown.
An intimate wedding helps the hosts and guests feel closer to each other during this meaningful moment.
In modern wedding styles that lean towards intimate celebrations, guests truly get to celebrate and share in the joy with the hosts. The bride and groom can freely express their feelings and emotions, and connect more with guests through fun activities and games. These parties, therefore, can last 4-5 hours or even into the next day, compared to traditional weddings which usually only last 2-3 hours. In modern weddings, couples have more opportunities to express their individuality.
PV: What kind of wedding styles are young people currently opting for?
Founder Huyen TrangFrom what I've observed, young brides and grooms are showing great interest in the following three wedding styles.
Firstly, outdoor weddings, especially destination weddings, are increasingly popular. Particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of couples wanting to hold destination weddings has skyrocketed. There are many beautiful destinations in Vietnam that are especially suitable for this type of wedding. The main target audience for this style is young couples living and studying abroad who want to hold their wedding in Vietnam, and more recently, couples from Australia and India have also sought out Thuyen Giay Wedding & Event Planner.
Destination Wedding is a popular wedding style chosen by many people.
Intimate weddings are also a popular choice for many couples. This style of wedding has characteristics such as: minimalist ceremonies, a small number of guests – mainly close friends and family of the bride and groom – easily creating a warm and intimate atmosphere and strong emotional moments during the ceremony. Couples who care about being close and sharing meaningful moments with loved ones often choose this style for their wedding.
An intimate wedding focuses on the emotions of the hosts and the connection with their guests.
Vietnamese traditional wedding attire is currently a trend among young couples who appreciate nostalgia, tradition, or traditional Vietnamese wedding ceremonies. The most popular traditional costumes include the ao dai, ao Nhat Binh, ao Tac, and ao ngu than. From a wedding expert's perspective, I believe this style's rise highlights traditional cultural values and stands out more compared to Western wedding styles.
Traditional Vietnamese wedding attire is also a popular choice for many young couples.
PV: With those styles, what will the wedding venue, wedding ceremony, wedding attire, wedding photos, and wedding decorations be like?
Founder: Huyen TrangFirst of all, the wedding rituals of these three styles are usually minimalist, focusing on the connection between the hosts and their closest guests. A key characteristic is that all elements related to the wedding revolve around personal identity (highly personalized) and emphasize the privacy of the bride and groom.
With the current trend of wedding styles, personal identity is reflected in every aspect of the wedding celebration.
The venues for these styles are usually outdoors. There are many suitable locations in Vietnam such as Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An Ancient Town, Hue Imperial City, Sa Pa city... Or weddings on yachts, on the beach, in meadows, from romantic homestays to luxurious resorts, on rocky outcrops or even in mountain crevices...
Regarding wedding photography style, couples often desire natural, uninhibited shots that capture many spontaneous emotional moments of the bride and groom. Wedding attire is usually chosen to clearly express the identity and personality of the bride and groom. The decoration style also reflects the personal taste of the couple. The styles are diverse, unique, and suitable for various venues.
PV: Will the trend of travel weddings continue to be popular and favored in the future?
Founder: Huyen TrangDestination weddings are a unique form of wedding organization, blending the distinctive cultural elements that the bride and groom wish to express with the beauty of the local landscape. This trend is expected to continue to be popular in the future.
Destination weddings will be a wedding trend in the near future.
A defining characteristic of destination weddings is their open setting, offering unique experiences for both the couple and guests, allowing them to fully appreciate the local natural beauty. For destination weddings, weather conditions are also a crucial factor influencing the ceremony. Therefore, wedding planners need contingency plans for bad weather.
