Italy is beginning to reopen to tourism after a long lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and the Italian Ministry of Environment have joined forces to launch a new hiking route connecting all 25 national parks across the country. This is part of an effort to promote nature conservation and encourage outdoor recreation in Italy.
The route of the new walking path stretches from north to south.
Italian Environment Minister Sergio Costa emphasized the importance of conservation and education in creating this new walking route. He stated that people need more outdoor activities during the post-Covid-19 recovery period, and therefore, this can be seen as a project to promote environmental culture, biodiversity, and sustainable development to everyone.
The new route includes nine more national parks compared to the old route.
A new hiking route in Italy, called Sentiero dei Parchi or "Route of the Parks," winds through the snow-capped mountains of the Dolomites and Alps, along the Cinque Terre coast, across the rolling hills of Tuscany to the caves and forests of Abruzzo, plus a section of the route across Sicily and Sardinia.

Previously, Italy also had a hiking trail called Sentiero Italia, or "Italian Trail," nearly 7,000 km long, running along the slopes of the Apennine Mountains and the Alps, from Santa Teresa Gallura in the north of Sardinia to the town of Muggia in the province of Trieste. However, this trail only connected about 16 of Italy's 25 national parks.

Sentiero dei Parki will be different, as this section is an extension of the old route to pass through all 25 national parks across the country, including many newly added nature reserves, biosphere reserves, and UNESCO natural heritage sites.
Many UNESCO nature reserves, biosphere reserves, and natural heritage sites will be added along this route.
Between now and 2033, the Italian Ministry of Environment will invest approximately 35 million EUR (about 40 million USD) to maintain the road, restore sections damaged by weather and natural disasters, and organize activities to enhance local cultural identity and support the sustainable development of tourism.
Sentiero dei Parki is part of an effort to promote nature conservation and encourage outdoor recreation in Italy.
Like the Camino de Santiago and other long trekking routes around the world, hikers can collect passport stamps at various stops along the way. Upon completing the entire Sentiero dei Parchi, visitors will receive a stamp from the Ministry of Environment and the Italian Alpine Club.
