Egypt welcomes visitors to the Bent Pyramid

Those fascinated by the pyramids of Egypt and their fascinating ancient history will now have the chance to visit a unique pyramid structure south of Cairo.

Khaled al Anani, Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities, led a group of foreign ambassadors to the Dahshur Royal Cemetery to inaugurate the Bent Pyramid on Saturday (July 13). Thanks to a restoration project, tourists can now enter the pyramid’s interior, which features a 79-meter-long passageway leading to two burial chambers.

The 4,600-year-old Bent Pyramid, 101 meters high, is one of three pyramids built for Pharaoh Sneferu around 2,600 BC. Located 40 km south of the Egyptian capital Cairo, this unique architectural work is so named because of its unusual shape with two different tilt angles. It is known that the pyramid builders noticed signs of instability during construction and adjusted its angle midway. Later, the Bent Pyramid began to show signs of wear and tear, so the Red Pyramid was built nearby as a royal burial site.

The shape of the Bent Pyramid, though unusual, was an important bridge in the construction of Egyptian pyramids, bridging the gap between the earlier step pyramid architecture and the later straight-sided pyramids, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza.

So for the first time since its excavation in 1965, the unique structure has opened its doors to visitors as part of a plan to boost tourism, especially in less visited areas.
