In his article on the best Asian holiday destinations, Johnston chose Vietnam as his top choice. "Vietnam has lifted health restrictions, but you must have travel insurance with a minimum coverage of $10,000, including coverage related to Covid-19," Johnston wrote. He noted that Australians traveling to Vietnam need an e-visa and are not required to wear masks.
Regarding destinations in Vietnam, Johnston's first mention is the coastal city of Quy Nhon, with its "very stylish appeal, considered the next version of Da Nang." Next is Ninh Binh, with its "exposed limestone formations, numerous heritage caves, and vast rice paddies."

In the Northwest region, Johnston suggests Dien Bien, where ecotourism is developing with homestays in ethnic minority villages, forest landscapes, and Hmong culture. Meanwhile, Da Lat is described by Johnston as having elegant architecture and harmonious scenery, attracting honeymooning couples and suitable for adventurous sports such as hiking, mountain biking, or whitewater rafting.
Johnston suggests that the ideal time to visit Vietnam is from March to April because the weather is dry and pleasant. December to March is still good for sightseeing, and it's even more enjoyable sitting by the beach. Besides Vietnam, Johnston also suggests five other Southeast Asian countries: Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. South Korea and India are the remaining two countries on the list.
Johnston believes that tourists are flocking to Europe more, largely because Covid-19 prevention policies remain relatively strict in Asia. However, he notes that Asia remains a favorite destination for many Australians.
