Vietnamese documentary nominated for 2022 Oscars.

On November 16th, Mailukifilms announced that director Viet Vu's short documentary "The Eternal Springtime" has been nominated for Best Short Documentary at the 2022 Oscars.

According to specific information, the 26-minute film "Eternal Spring" has qualified for an Oscar after winning the Grand Prix Documentary Short at the 66th Cork International Film Festival in Ireland.

According to regulations at the Cork International Film Festival, the winning films in the categories of Grand Prix Irish Short (Best Irish Short Film), Grand Prix International Short (Best International Short Film), and Grand Prix Documentary Short (Best Documentary Short Film) are automatically nominated for the longlist at the 2022 Academy Awards in the categories of Best Animated Short Film, Best Action Short Film, and Best Documentary Short Film. From this shortlist, the organizers will evaluate and create a shortlist of nominees.

Before receiving its 2022 Oscar nomination, "Eternal Spring" premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival (Netherlands) and was featured in several important film events in Ukraine, China, and Azerbaijan.

The film's synopsis states: "In a treacherous wilderness, on the brink of extinction, a trembling son clings to his mother inside a natural cave in search of rebirth. Narrated from a first-person perspective, the film portrays the fragile present moments of a historically rich Southeast Asian nation transforming in the digital age. Ultimately, it is a film that conveys glimmers of hope for the future."

Viet Vu is an independent documentary filmmaker who made his first films at Hanoi Doclab – an experimental center for documentary and video art at the Goethe Institute in Hanoi. His first film, “The Ant-man” (2018), won the Purin Award for the Most Promising Filmmaker in Southeast Asia at the SeaShorts Film Festival in Malaysia; his second short documentary, “An Act of Affection” (2020), also premiered at the Locarno Film Festival.

This young director has been highly praised by professionals for his insightful perspective on the issues he addresses in his work. Furthermore, he is the only Vietnamese filmmaker selected, along with four other filmmakers from Southeast Asia, to participate in the SEAFIC Seed Lab – an activity for filmmakers exploring ideas for their first feature films.

Speaking about this short film, People's Artist Dao Ba Son commented: "With its unique style of presentation, the film will showcase the beauty of culture, tourism, and friendship and solidarity with other countries.
