After two years of travel restrictions due to Covid-19, Vietnamese tourists are more eager than ever to take a trip. The Christmas and New Year holidays, extending into the Lunar New Year, are always peak travel seasons in Vietnam. This year, Vietnamese tourists are also choosing to stay within the country because international commercial flights have not yet reopened, as well as concerns about the Omicron variant and rising service costs.
According to the online travel platform Booking.com, 80% of Vietnamese travelers say they need to make up for missed vacations due to the pandemic, and 43% want to visit lesser-known destinations instead of overly popular ones. Based on data from traveler booking trends in Vietnam, Booking.com suggests a list of 10 trending destinations to consider for trips in 2022.
The trend of choosing destinations that are "close to home".
Unsurprisingly, destinations near Ho Chi Minh City such as Thang Tam (Ba Ria - Vung Tau), Tay Ninh, and Bien Hoa rank highly in the list of the top 10 most popular destinations chosen by Vietnamese tourists. Due to the inability to travel abroad and concerns about outbreaks in key tourist areas, many people have opted to travel to cities closer to their homes. These trips typically last only 1-3 days, avoiding crowded places to ensure a safe and economical vacation.
Thang Tam commune (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) has long been famous for the Thang Tam Temple complex - a cluster of three historical sites: Thang Tam Temple, Ba Temple, and Whale Mausoleum. Besides its ancient architecture and long-standing cultural and historical values, many tourists also come here to pray for good fortune and peace.
Located about 100 km from Ho Chi Minh City, the Cao Dai Holy See in Tay Ninh attracts many Vietnamese and international tourists.
Tay Ninh is the "cradle" of Cao Dai religion and boasts the "roof" of Southern Vietnam - Mount Ba Den, 986m high, famous for its pristine natural scenery and spiritual architectural complex. Guinness World Records recognizes the Mount Ba Den cable car station as the "world's largest cable car station" and the Tay Bo Da Son Buddha statue as the "tallest bronze Buddha statue in Asia located on a mountaintop".
In 2022, Tay Ninh will offer free entrance tickets to Ba Den Mountain for tourists to stimulate tourism. Bien Hoa is suitable for picnics and camping trips to immerse yourself in nature at tourist areas such as Buu Long, Bo Cap Vang, or Giang Dien Waterfall.
"Go to the mountains, go to the sea" to find a secluded, pristine place.
While many popular destinations like Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc are experiencing a slump in tourism, some localities, thanks to their "isolated" locations, are bucking the trend. Restrictions on large gatherings have led many tourists to seek out secluded destinations nestled in the mountains or surrounded by the sea, enjoying the feeling of being one with nature, immersed in diverse ecosystems and fresh air.
Cultural village in Meo Vac, Ha Giang.
Meo Vac (Ha Giang) is a small valley surrounded by limestone mountains, home to the H'Mong ethnic group. According to surveys, 84% of Vietnamese tourists want to experience the local culture here. Those who love adventure, cloud hunting, or photography mostly choose to ride motorbikes up Ma Pi Leng Pass to admire the majestic mountain scenery, with the deep blue Nho Que River winding below and the moss-covered H'Mong stilt houses hidden by drifting clouds.
Pù Luông is located in the northwestern part of Thanh Hóa province, spanning two districts: Bá Thước and Quan Hóa.
Pu Luong boasts the natural beauty of its majestic forests and terraced rice fields. It's the perfect destination for nature lovers who want to explore new lands or ancient villages. Visitors can learn traditional skills such as weaving, embroidery, and basket-making from the locals.
Cam Ranh is a quiet seaside town located 60 km south of Nha Trang.
Cam Ranh is a tranquil seaside town located 60 km south of Nha Trang, famous for Cam Ranh Bay, which has been voted one of the ten most beautiful bays in Vietnam. Many tourists choose to explore the stunning, unspoiled islands of Binh Ba or Binh Hung.
Binh Ba Island is famous for its swimming and snorkeling experiences. Binh Hung Island, on the other hand, is a "paradise" for seafood lovers. Tourists often visit floating restaurants to enjoy local specialties such as lobster, grilled sea urchin, various types of snails, and squid rolls wrapped in rice paper.
