Many travel companies, including Airbnb, have pledged to end tours that include camel riding and other animal activities at popular locations in Egypt.
This decision was made following an investigation by the animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), which exposed the appalling treatment of working animals such as camels and horses. PETA's report revealed numerous cases of animals suffering from malnutrition, abuse, and even inhumane abandonment when they were no longer able to work.
Many tour companies have pledged to end tours that include camel riding and other animal activities at popular locations in Egypt.
Tracy Reiman, Executive Vice President of PETA, said that more and more travel companies are opposing the use of animals in these activities and encouraging tourists to enjoy the beauty of the Pyramids and other landmarks without contributing to animal abuse.
The list of travel companies that have stopped offering animal rides includes Airbnb, British Airways Holidays, Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, Exodus Adventure Travels, Grand Circle Corporation, TCS World Travel, and Scott Dunn. “PETA welcomes the decision by Airbnb and other travel companies to end these shameful animal riding activities. We also call on the Egyptian authorities to demonstrate their responsibility and take measures to protect these animals,” Reiman shared.
According to Travel Pulse, PETA has repeatedly contacted Egyptian government officials, including the Ministry of Tourism, to urge the enactment of regulations to protect working animals in the tourism industry. The organization continues to advocate for improved living conditions for these animals.

In Egypt, working animals like camels and horses have long been associated with the tourism industry, playing a crucial role in guiding visitors to explore historical sites. At the Giza Pyramids, the Sahara Desert, and the Valley of the Kings, the image of tourists riding camels through the sand dunes or taking horse-drawn carriage tours of the ruins has become a hallmark. These experiences not only offer unique perspectives on the majestic landscapes but also contribute to the livelihoods of many local people who have depended on this service for generations. However, in recent years, the use of animals in tourism has sparked controversy regarding animal welfare, prompting animal rights organizations to pressure tour operators to put an end to this practice.
