Ben Thanh Market, a long-standing symbol of Saigon's culture.
Construction of the market began in 1912. Initially, the market was located on the banks of the Ben Nghe River, where there was a river port used by soldiers and civilians to enter and exit Gia Dinh Citadel (Quy Thanh, Bat Quai Citadel), hence the name Ben Thanh Market.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the French rebuilt Ben Thanh Market at its current location between 1912 and 1914. The South Gate features an iconic clock. In front of the main gate (South Gate) is the Ben Thanh Market roundabout, also known as Dien Hong Square or Quach Thi Trang Square.
Ben Thanh Market, located in the heart of District 1, is one of Saigon's most famous markets, renowned for its bustling trading culture and history spanning over a century.
Having weathered the ups and downs of history, this market has long become a symbol of the vibrant trading culture of Saigon in particular and Vietnam in general. Along with the economic and tourism development of Ho Chi Minh City, this market has also become increasingly famous and particularly attracts a large number of foreign tourists.
Ben Thanh Market was established in the mid-19th century. Having weathered the ups and downs of history, this market has long become a symbol of the vibrant trading culture of Saigon in particular and Vietnam in general.
This is not only a proud achievement but also a vivid testament to the historical, cultural, and artistic value that this structure has preserved over time. In the future, Ben Thanh Market is committed to implementing systematic and scientific preservation, safeguarding as many original architectural details as possible. At the same time, we will enhance diverse promotional activities to showcase the beauty of Ben Thanh Market to domestic and international tourists.
With its designation as a city-level historical site, the structure will have its protected area defined and demarcated according to the documentation. The Ben Thanh Market historical site will be managed by the Department of Culture and Sports, the People's Committee of District 1, and the People's Committee of Ben Thanh Ward (District 1) in accordance with the law on cultural heritage.
