Soneva Fushi, an eco-resort located in the UNESCO-recognized Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, is looking for a “barefoot bookseller.” The job posting, posted on the hotel’s official Instagram in mid-September, reads: “This is a position for someone who loves to read on a desert island, sell books barefoot, and live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”
If hired, you'll live at the resort, where guests pay $2,000 a night for a one-bedroom suite and $26,000 a night for a nine-bedroom villa.

This person’s job is to manage an island bookstore for half a year. The job requires someone willing to leave the bustling world behind to sell books on a deserted island in the Maldives. They must be a passionate reader, a good communicator, and love writing. If that describes you, then you are the perfect person for the position the hotel is looking for. The resort partnered with UK-based libraries to open its first on-site bookstore in 2018. That’s when they hired their first bookseller.
The resort, which was closed due to Covid-19, reopened on September 1, with full safety measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus. Visitors must wear masks in public.

The South Asian island nation is one of the few to welcome visitors from all countries when it reopened on July 15. Visitors are only allowed to visit resort islands, and they must stay at their accommodation full-time. Initially, the government did not require visitors to have a negative test result for the coronavirus. The rules changed on September 11 due to the increase in cases.
