Traditional and Contemporary Music Night: 1011 - 2021 at L'Espace

A new decade begins with 2021, and in this year, Thang Long - Hanoi will celebrate its 1011th anniversary. Like a capital city that is both modern and deeply rooted in traditional culture, Vietnamese music has also witnessed the intermingling of traditional and contemporary music throughout the past decades.

The 1011 - 2021 music night at L'Espace will portray a space where poetry and music become harmonious, aiming to recreate a traditional method of musical creation in Vietnamese poetry from the Ly-Tran dynasties. In traditional dances harmonized with instrumental accompaniment and contemporary Vietnamese music, performances of traditional songs interspersed with instrumental solos will bring about a range of emotions. Memories of a thousand-year-old Thang Long (Hanoi) will be recreated through the harmonious blend of poetry from the Ly-Tran dynasties and contemporary Vietnamese musical works.

The artists ofTokyo Ancient MusicThe performance will recreate the atmosphere of traditional Vietnamese music without using any sound amplification equipment. Through the skillful hands of masters of traditional Vietnamese music, ancient instruments such as stringed instruments, clappers, small drums, ceremonial drums, two-stringed fiddles, and gourd-shaped lutes will successively resonate, reviving the traditional music that many Vietnamese people today seem to have forgotten.

Hanoi New Music EnsembleHanoi New Music Ensemble is the first professional contemporary chamber music group in Vietnam. With guidance and support from domestic and international experts in the field of music, Hanoi New Music Ensemble is expected to become a cultural ambassador promoting contemporary Vietnamese music to the international community. Also at the upcoming concert, Hanoi New Music Ensemble will perform a piece from the work "Five Elements" by the late composer Vu Nhat Tan – who has guided the group since its inception.

Featuring two musical groups with influences from two different time periods, the Vietnamese Traditional and Contemporary Music Night 1011-2021 promises to bring moments of exhilaration to the audience. This musical journey, steeped in history, will not disappoint those who have a love for Vietnamese music.
