Introduced to the United States in the early 1900s, Japanese cherry trees seem to have transformed the country's atmosphere every spring. Varieties such as Yoshino, Kwanzan, and Akebono burst into a dazzling display of delicate pink and white blossoms for about two weeks each year. Parks, gardens, and misty towns momentarily emerge from the harsh winter chill and are bathed in the warmth of the cherry blossoms.

The traditional cherry blossom festival in the United States dates back to 1935, honoring the gift of 3,000 cherry trees that Japan gifted in 1912. This celebration takes place in communities across the country as a symbol of peace and international friendship.
Predicting the flowering time
A single cherry tree will only bloom for about a week, while an entire cherry blossom tree of all varieties will bloom for about two weeks. Knowing the blooming time is helpful for those planning a trip to the United States. The most common blooming time is between the last week of March and the first week of April. Using this as a benchmark, in New England, the cherry blossoms bloom about 20 days later, and in southern states like Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas, a week and a half to two weeks earlier. More accurate predictions require year-on-year comparisons of the complex interplay of weather and climate, including factors such as cloudy days, rain, snow, and temperature. The National Park Service, which is tasked with predicting blooming times before the National Cherry Blossom Festival, says it's almost impossible to be more precise than 10 days from the actual event because human-induced climate change can lead to inaccurate estimates.

However, be sure to jot down these early predictions in your notebook so you can proactively plan your trip to the US this holiday season!
