My Chau Temple - Co Loa
In the journey to discover the historical vestiges of Hanoi, surely many people have heard of My Chau Temple - a small temple located in the Co Loa Citadel complex. Co Loa Citadel, with a history of more than 2000 years, is one of the particularly important national historical relics of Vietnam. And My Chau Temple, although only a small part of that complex, carries within it a touching and mysterious story.
My Chau Temple, also known as Ba Chua Temple or My Chau Temple, is located to the west of Ngu Trieu Di Quy communal house.
According to the local people, long ago, there were some fishermen fishing on the Hoang Giang River. While pulling their nets, they pulled up a headless stone statue, sitting cross-legged with their hands on their knees. The statue had the shape of a woman. At first, people did not know what it was, but when the local dignitaries saw it, they all believed that this was Princess My Chau - the talented but tragic daughter of King An Duong Vuong.
And that headless stone statue, according to the locals, is the fulfillment of the princess's oath of old. The statue is said to have returned to Co Loa along the Hoang Giang River to "serve the king". To remember and respect Princess My Chau, the people built My Chau Temple to worship her.
The harem is where the altar of Princess My Chau is placed. On top is a throne. The innermost room is where the stone statue is placed. This is the "My Chau stone statue" mentioned in the legend.
What is special is that the statue is dressed like Princess My Chau when she was alive. The caretakers of the hermitage are also carefully selected, they must be virtuous people, have happy families, and obedient children. This further increases the sacredness and mystery of My Chau Hermitage.
My Chau Temple is a symbol of a steadfast, faithful love that has touched many people from ancient times to the present, between My Chau and Trong Thuy. Although the story behind My Chau Temple and the love story between My Chau and Trong Thuy has not been confirmed, this is indeed an extremely sacred place to pray for love. In addition, this is also a place chosen by young people to check-in every time Tet comes and spring comes.
Tay Ho Palace
Tay Ho Temple is located on a large peninsula in the middle of West Lake, built in the 17th century. This is the temple of Princess Lieu Hanh - a saint in the Four Immortals according to Vietnamese folk legend. She was an exceptionally talented person, good at singing, poetry, and had extraordinary character and virtue.
Tay Ho Temple is one of the most famous spiritual tourist destinations in Hanoi.
If you are a person who has no experience traveling to Hanoi, you will probably think that Tay Ho Palace is only famous for praying for fortune in business, but do not know that this is also one of the famous places to pray for love. In fact, in addition to praying for fortune, Tay Ho Palace also attracts many believers to come here to pray for love and return the favor when love is complete every Tet holiday.
When going to the temple to pray for love, you should prepare offerings to offer to the main altars such as: Tam Bao altar, Duc Ong altar and Thanh Mau altar. The offerings at the Tam Bao altar do not need to be too elaborate, you just need to put flowers, fruits, candles, incense and a petition clearly stating your wishes. A small note when you place offerings at this altar is that you should not put salty offerings or gold coins because this is a place to worship Buddha.
The space at the Palace is covered with ancient Vietnamese folk designs with sculptures of the four dragons, four seasons, dragon and phoenix, green and white tiger, etc.
Similar to the Three Jewels altar, offerings to the Duc Ong altar do not need to be too elaborate. You can arrange the offerings like the Three Jewels altar but can add votive money, tea, and wine. For those who pray for love, offerings to the Holy Mother altar are the most important. You need to prepare votive money, candy, a wish sheet, and in addition, you cannot miss five red roses, betel and some money.
Going to the temple to pray for love is truly a unique cultural feature of our people since ancient times. Hope you will have a beautiful love to experience a warm Valentine's Day.
