According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Geophysics (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), on the morning of May 27, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred in Nho Quan district, Ninh Binh.
Previously, on May 26, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred on the Vietnam - Laos border, about 50 km from the center of Muong Xen town (Ky Son mountainous district, Nghe An).
3.4 magnitude earthquake in Ninh Binh causes shaking
In the central area of Muong Xen, Ky Son district, people felt the shaking more clearly when they were in high-rise buildings, however the aftershocks only lasted from 2 to 3 seconds. After the aftershocks ended, the activities and daily life of the people in the area returned to normal.
The magnitude of this earthquake does not pose a disaster risk.
Earthquakes in Ninh Binh are likely to continue in the near future, but are unlikely to be greater than 5.5 on the Richter scale. More detailed studies are needed to assess earthquake activity in this area.
In the future, earthquakes may appear and cause major consequences, especially if they occur in densely populated areas with key projects.
Therefore, earthquake hazard assessment is very necessary and needs to be updated annually to practically serve the work of socio-economic development planning and seismic resistance design for all types of works from key areas to residential areas.
