With an area of up to 19,000 km2Kakadu is located 170 km southeast of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory. Kakadu is the home of the Gagudju language, one of three Aboriginal languages spoken in the Northern Territory in the early 20th century.

After many years of living in this land, the indigenous Bininj people have divided Kakadu's weather into six distinct seasons. From December to March of the following year is the Gudjewg season with thundering waterfalls and dazzling lightning. Banggerreng is the season of flowering melaleuca trees and small lakes with an abundance of birds in April. June and August are the Wurrgeng season with pleasant cool weather and clear blue skies. From September onwards is the period of hot, dry Gurrung weather.
