According to the Bangkok Post, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has made a welcome decision to extend the operating hours of four major subway lines by two hours on New Year's Eve 2025.
This decision not only meets the travel needs of residents and tourists during this important festival but also helps to minimize the severe traffic congestion that often occurs during major holidays. As a result, everyone can comfortably enjoy the vibrant festival atmosphere without worrying about transportation.
To accommodate the travel needs of residents and tourists during the New Year celebrations, Thailand's subway system has decided to extend its operating hours by two hours on New Year's Eve.
Surapong Piyachote, Vice Minister of Transport, affirmed that all government agencies are actively implementing detailed plans to ensure the absolute safety of residents and tourists during the upcoming festival. Authorities are working closely together to inspect, repair, and upgrade the transportation system, especially in areas with high concentrations of people. In addition, law enforcement will increase patrols and controls to ensure traffic order and safety and prevent any potential incidents.
MRTA has announced that trains on the purple, blue, yellow, and pink lines will run until 2 AM on January 1st to facilitate travel for people planning to attend the New Year's Eve countdown event, especially at key locations in Bangkok such as Iconsiam shopping mall, CentralWorld, and One Bangkok.
This means that four major subway lines will remain open until 2 a.m., making it easier for people to get around.
Additionally, parking areas will remain open until 1 AM on January 2nd along the purple, blue, yellow, and green lines, and until 2 AM on the pink line. The agency is offering free fares to encourage the use of public transport on this day.
The Lunar New Year atmosphere in Bangkok is always full of joy and warmth. Besides lively entertainment activities, Thai people also dedicate time to participating in traditional Buddhist ceremonies at ancient temples. The ringing of temple bells blends with the cheerful laughter and conversations of the people, creating a truly special atmosphere. And as night falls, visitors can enjoy the spectacular moment of watching the dazzling fireworks display over the Chao Phraya River.
