Three Wise Men
The name Three Wise Men originated from the story of the three wise men visiting the infant Jesus. According to the Bible, when Jesus was born, three kings representing Africa, Asia, and Europe came to offer Jesus many precious gifts. However, the records do not specify whether these three were wise men, astrologers, doctors, or scholars, so they are collectively called the Three Wise Men.
The story of "the three wise men visiting the infant Jesus" is depicted on a mosaic.
But those are the three wise men in the Bible. For whiskey lovers, however, these three men are known by different names: Jim Beam, Jack Daniel's, and Johnnie Walker. They are the founders of three famous whiskey brands bearing their names; and also the three main spirits that make up the Three Wise Men cocktail.
Three Wise Men is blended from three types of whiskey: Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam, and Johnnie Walker.
First and foremost is Jack Daniel's – the most familiar "friend" of men in every bar. Produced in Tennessee (USA), Jack Daniel's remains the choice of most Americans – young and old – due to its blend of traditional and modern flavors. The combination of oak, pepper, and spices creates a strong, somewhat heavy and challenging impression, while vanilla provides a smooth, melodious finish, lingering even in the toughest men.
Following Jack Daniel's is Johnnie Walker – a blended Scotch whisky. The Johnnie Walker used to blend Three Wise Men is usually Red Label – one of the brand's most popular and easy-to-drink varieties. Red Label is described by the brand as being crafted from over 35 different ingredients, resulting in an amber hue and a pleasant blend of spicy notes and subtle smoky undertones.
The third component of Three Wise Men is one of the world's most famous bourbon brands - Jim Beam. Of the three whiskies that make up Three Wise Men, Jim Beam is perhaps the most distinctive and profound. Half of Jim Beam is sweetness derived from corn extract, and the other half is richness thanks to its two-year aging process in smoky oak barrels.
Strong, and healthy
Most cocktails are sophisticated blends of base spirits, liqueurs, and natural ingredients and flavors; and the Three Wise Men is certainly an outlier, unlike any commonly seen recipe. Just one shot of Jack Daniel's, one shot of Jim Beam, one shot of Johnnie Walker, and 2-3 ice cubes, all stirred in a shaker until perfectly chilled, then poured into a rock glass. The preparation sounds incredibly simple, even… disappointing. Indeed, if the drinker isn't knowledgeable about different types of spirits, they'll likely grimace after the first sip and quickly exclaim:What kind of cocktail is this? It smells so strongly of whiskey!
Typical cocktails are a mixture of alcohol and natural flavorings.
But, if you're a whiskey connoisseur, the Three Wise Men will be a challenging conquest. Not only because of its strength, but also because of the layers of flavor that subtly emerge with each sip. Sometimes sharp, sometimes sweet, sometimes balanced. A drinker with an aesthetic sensibility won't just drink it, but will want to listen to it, slowly converse with it, patiently discover its nuances. After all, this cocktail doesn't need the aid of syrups, fruits, or sparkling water like other cocktails. The three components of the Three Wise Men are themselves, each a unique and independent entity, requiring no elaborate embellishments or decorations. The "wise man" is the same. At first glance, it seems unassuming and simple, but only after tasting it do you realize the complexities hidden within that simplicity.
Three Wise Men not only satisfies those seeking a strong, bold drink, but is also the perfect choice for vegetarians and those on a diet, because this cocktail contains nothing but alcohol.
Where can I find these "three wise men"?
Most bars in Vietnam don't currently have the Three Wise Men cocktail on their menus. But that doesn't mean they don't serve it. With just three popular spirits (available at most bars) – Jack Daniel's, Johnnie Walker, and Jim Beam – bartenders are probably quietly waiting for a customer brave enough to whisper in their ear: "I'd like a Three Wise Men."
