The season of flowering rocks: Buckwheat flowers and autumn on the rocky plateau.

20/11/2025

In late autumn, buckwheat flowers burst into bloom, creating soft, pinkish-purple carpets amidst the arid, jagged slopes of the Tuyen Quang plateau.

Tuyen Quang (formerly Ha Giang province) enters the buckwheat flower season as the first chill of autumn touches the rocky plateau and the fields of flowers begin to bloom. From the valleys to the mountain slopes, the pinkish-purple color spreads, softening the familiar gray of the rocks and creating a very distinctive visual rhythm of the far north. The harshness of the rocks, wind, and steep slopes becomes less harsh when the flowers appear, gently covering the land and sky with a unique dreamy layer of November.

The pinkish-purple hues of the buckwheat flowers soften the landscape of the rocky plateau in the autumn weather.

Buckwheat flowers bloom for only a very short period each year, usually from the end of October to around mid-November. But it is precisely this fragility and brevity that makes the flowering season a time when many people come to admire them and take a long breath of peace.

The legendary National Highway 4C leading to Dong Van, already beautiful, is now even more enchanting with the patches of buckwheat flowers lining both sides, appearing and disappearing through the early morning mist. Along the winding mountain paths, buckwheat flowers sometimes appear as vast pink carpets, other times as just a faint line of color against the dark, jagged rocks. Everything is naturally beautiful, requiring no artificial arrangement.

Passing through Yen Minh, up to Pho Cao, and then reaching the Sung La valley – once known as the setting for the film "Pao's House" – buckwheat fields appear in places that make people slow down. Old yellow-walled houses stand silently amidst the mountain wind, with fields of blooming flowers in front of them; the early blossoms are white and pink, then turn deep purple as the season ends.

Sung La possesses the beauty of a cinematic painting, where flowers embrace the small village and soften the harsh lines of the rocky plateau. In the afternoon light, each patch of pink and purple seems to be infused with color, making it possible for a photographer to capture a stunning image with just a raise of their hand.

From Sung La, following the road to Lung Cu, the flowers appear in a different shade. Here, buckwheat grows along the hillside, bordering the flagpole. Standing at the northernmost point of the country, looking down at the small villages below gradually disappearing into the sunset and evening mist, the silhouettes of villagers walking on the stone path, the sound of the wind mingling with the calls of children. In that moment, the carpet of pink and purple flowers seems to become a part of the breath of everyday life in this border region.

Continuing the journey to Meo Vac, along the winding paths of Ma Pi Leng Pass, buckwheat flowers reappear, displaying a beauty that is both gentle and powerful. The flowers grow along the edge of the ravine, embracing the small trails used by locals. Below lies the deep blue Nho Que River, while above, layered rocky mountains are enveloped in clouds. The contrast between the rocks and the flowers, the awe-inspiring height, and the tiny petals seemingly breathing in the wind, creates an unforgettable scene. It's a place where many visitors only stop briefly but carry with them lasting memories.

Walking through the buckwheat fields during the blooming season, one can easily witness the daily life of the Hmong, Dao, and Lo Lo ethnic groups unfolding right alongside the flower fields. Under the trees, a few elderly people sit weaving linen, the distant sounds of agricultural machinery echo, and children run around on the dirt roads. The flowers are not separate from life but blend in, becoming a part of the season, the fields, and the labor, only incidentally becoming a season that attracts tourists. And it is this naturalness that makes each flower season special, unpretentious but simple, reflecting the essence of the highlands.

Life for the people in the highlands continues amidst fields of buckwheat flowers.

Buckwheat flowers are not originally grown for ornamental purposes. They are a traditional food crop of the highland people, planted after the corn harvest to make bread, yeast, and animal feed. This small plant, belonging to the buckwheat family, was once common in many northern mountainous regions, but it is the rocky terrain and cold climate of Dong Van - Meo Vac that allows the flowers to bloom in vast carpets.

Mặc dù mọc ở nhiều nơi nhưng chỉ ở Tuyên Quang, hoa được canh tác thành từng cánh đồng lớn và trở thành biểu tượng

Although it grows in many places, it is only in Tuyen Quang that the flower is cultivated in large fields and has become a symbol.

Elsewhere, buckwheat is only grown sporadically for domestic needs. However, in Tuyen Quang, the practice of intercropping and the wide, rocky valleys create ideal conditions for this flower to spread into vast fields. The coincidence of the flowering season and the landscape of the rocky plateau has made buckwheat a "signature" of Tuyen Quang, transforming it from an ordinary food crop into a distinct tourist destination remembered each year.

In recent years, the local organization of the Buckwheat Flower Festival has served as a way to both attract tourism and preserve local cultural values, helping the people sell their agricultural products, handicrafts, and traditional cuisine.

Buckwheat flowers blooming against jagged rocks, stone walls, or distant mountain ranges have become a characteristic image of autumn in the rocky plateau.

At the end of the journey, as people leave Dong Van or Meo Vac and return along the familiar slopes, they often look back a few more times. Not to find one last carpet of flowers, but to linger longer in the gentle feeling that the buckwheat season brings. Because Ha Giang is beautiful in every season, but perhaps no season softens the heart as much as autumn - the season when even the stones want to bloom.
