Speaking to the press, Myanmar's Minister of Tourism and Hotels, U Ohn Maung, said that changing the tourism slogan and implementing new communication activities for the industry is expected to increase the number of tourists and travelers to Myanmar. According to statistics, the number of tourists to Myanmar saw a slight decrease in 2017, with 3.4 million foreign visitors, compared to 4.6 million in 2015.

The country's tourism industry is developing, but it is not yet considered a potential destination due to the high cost of travel, accommodation, and food. In particular, airfares from Western countries to Myanmar are very high, requiring multiple layovers and long flight times.

The Myanmar Tourism Promotion Association, the organization responsible for implementing tourism promotion programs and activities in the country, is focusing on building Myanmar's image as an "exploratory tourism destination." This is because the country is known for its pristine nature, beautiful beaches, diverse culture, well-preserved palaces and tombs, and friendly, hospitable people.
The majority of Asian tourists visiting Myanmar come from China, Thailand, and Malaysia.
