National Geographic received more than 2.2 million photos from 132 photographers in 60 countries this year.
"As travel returned, we ventured back into the world with a renewed sense of adventure. The photos we publish reflect the beauty of the world we live in through new perspectives," NatGeo said about this year's photo selection criteria.
National Geographic is the American magazine of the National Geographic Society and a pay-per-view television channel. Each year, NatGeo announces photography awards, including the best photos of 2022 in various categories such as travel, exploration, nature, and sustainability. The judging panel consists of leading photographers from around the world.

A photograph taken in Choquequirao, Peru, continues to be among the top 17 most impressive travel photos of the year. The image of locals riding mules in the romantic setting sparks curiosity in visitors, prompting them to want to visit Choquequirao themselves.
