Observatories, monasteries, castles, towers, fortresses, and palaces were all built for various reasons, such as defensive measures, or to take full advantage of the majestic scenery, or perhaps simply to take advantage of the tranquil setting. Most of these structures were built on mountaintops, cliffs, and other natural landmarks.
