Japan issues warning of danger due to Asama volcano eruption

26/08/2019

On August 25, Mount Asama in central Japan erupted, forcing the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a warning of flying rocks and lava within a 2 km radius of the crater.

According to JMA, at 7:28 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, local time, Mount Asama erupted. The smoke column rose more than 600 meters high and then spread north, a large amount of lava above the crater with a height of about 200 meters.

The JMA has issued a level 2 volcanic alert on its five-step scale, meaning people should not approach the mountain.

This is the second eruption in a month, nearly three weeks after the last eruption on August 7. JMA is closely monitoring the volcano's activity, and forecasts the risk of another eruption of similar intensity.

Mount Asama is 2,568 m high, straddles Gunma and Nagano prefectures, and is about 140 km northwest of Tokyo.
