Japan launches pilot program to reopen tourism

20/05/2022

On May 17, Japan announced that it will begin a trial tourism program, allowing small group tours to enter the country from the end of May, in preparation for the country's full reopening.

According to the information above, tourists who have received three doses of Covid-19 vaccine from the US, Australia, Thailand and Singapore will be allowed to join tours to Japan. The trips are strictly planned by travel agencies and always accompanied by tour operators.

Earlier in May, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced in a speech in London that border control measures in Japan would be introduced in line with those of other countries in June. However, no further details were given, including when the country would fully open its borders to international tourists.

Currently, only foreign workers, business travelers and qualified tourists are allowed to enter Japan. They still need to provide a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours and comply with the country's Covid-19 regulations.

Since 2020, at the early stages of the pandemic, Japan has proactively closed its borders. Easing measures introduced since April allow 10,000 people to enter the country per day. However, eligible groups include citizens, researchers, students, family members of Japanese citizens and priority business travelers.

In the context of Japan's travel restrictions due to Covid-19, the number of foreign tourists to Japan in 2021 reached only 245,900, down 99.2% compared to 2019, before the pandemic appeared.
