According to information from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in Plan No. 3198/KH-BVHTTDL on organizing the 50th anniversary of the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972 Convention), commemorative activities will be held during the official visit to Vietnam of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay (from September 5-7). These activities will be jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the People's Committee of Ninh Binh province, and the Vietnam National UNESCO Committee.
The commemoration ceremony will take place on September 6th at the Ninh Binh Provincial Convention Center, with the guest of honor being Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.
Supporting activities within the framework of the celebration include a photo exhibition on world heritage sites, showcasing beautiful images of cultural and natural world heritage sites in Vietnam, contributing to promoting tourism, introducing the country and people of Vietnam to international friends and tourists from both within and outside the country; screening short films introducing heritage sites, experiences, and best practices in the conservation and promotion of world heritage sites in Vietnam; and awarding prizes for paintings about heritage.
UNESCO chose Ninh Binh for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Convention.
An exhibition of photographs about world heritage sites took place on September 6th at the Ninh Binh Provincial Convention Center, followed by an exhibition at the Trang An eco-tourism area, open to visitors from September 7th to 18th.
Towards the global celebration in Florence, Italy in November 2022, marking the 50th anniversary of the Convention, the 50th anniversary of the Convention on the Protection of World Heritage and Natural Heritage in Vietnam in 2022 is expected to kick off a series of global activities commemorating the 1972 Convention, and also mark 35 years since the Convention's implementation in Vietnam.
Therefore, organizing the 50th anniversary celebration of the 1972 Convention demonstrates Vietnam's role, contribution, and responsibility, together with the international community, to honor and further promote the value of this particularly important Convention, widely publicize Vietnam's achievements in the conservation and promotion of world heritage to UNESCO member states and the wider international community, affirm Vietnam's position within the UNESCO framework, concretize measures to implement the Vietnam-UNESCO Memorandum of Cooperation for the period 2021-2025, create favorable conditions for Vietnam's candidacy for membership in the World Heritage Committee for the term 2023-2027, and further strengthen Vietnam-UNESCO cooperation in the coming time.
