Padel - From a family pastime to a global sensation

The history of Padel originates in Mexico in 1969. Businessman Enrique Corcuera, wanting a compact tennis court at home but lacking sufficient space, created a playing surface only one-third the size of a traditional tennis court, surrounded by glass walls. His wife established the basic rules for the game. What began as a family pastime quickly spread to Spain and Argentina in the 1970s and 80s, and subsequently across Latin America and Europe. This rapid growth led to the establishment of the International Padel Federation (FIP) in 1991, marking a significant milestone in the professionalization of the sport.

According to FIP statistics, there are currently around 25 million Padel players worldwide. In Spain alone, it is the second most popular sport after football. The Padel craze is not limited to Europe but has spread to Asia, where global stars like Cristiano Ronaldo actively promote it, such as when he played Padel in Singapore in June 2023.

The appeal of Padel: Accessibility and high social relevance.

One of the main factors contributing to Padel's popularity is its accessibility. With rules and scoring similar to tennis, beginners can quickly grasp the game, regardless of age, gender, or skill level. Padel rackets are smaller and lighter than tennis rackets, with a solid surface and small holes to reduce air resistance, making it easier for players to control the ball. Padel balls have a similar weight to tennis balls but lower pressure, reducing bounce and allowing players to easily control the ball's direction. Furthermore, Padel courts are smaller than tennis courts, typically measuring 10x20 meters and surrounded by glass walls, allowing players to move easily and reducing the need to chase the ball. The artificial turf surface also helps protect players from injury.

The most unique aspect of Padel lies in its wall-touching rule. After the ball bounces once on the court, players can let it hit the glass wall before returning it to the opponent's court. This rule creates complex shots, requiring players to have strategic thinking and quick reflexes. This style of play not only increases the drama but also creates a special appeal, making Padel increasingly popular within the sports community.

Furthermore, Padel is highly social. The sport is typically played in pairs, in an enclosed space, requiring players to constantly communicate and coordinate effectively with their teammates. This not only strengthens teamwork but also provides opportunities for players to expand their relationships with others who share the same passion, creating a close-knit and positive community.

Padel not only brings joy but also offers numerous outstanding health benefits. The constant movement during a match helps players increase their heart rate and improve cardiovascular health. A single Padel game can burn over 700 calories, while also improving flexibility and agility and reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Mentally, it's also an effective way to relieve anxiety and achieve a positive state of mind through connection with others. The application of strategic thinking also significantly improves concentration.

For beginners, here are a few tips to help you get started and avoid injury. Most importantly, warm up your hips, knees, and shoulders thoroughly. When the ball bounces off the wall, don't rush to chase it; wait for the rebound before hitting. For serves, hit low and control your power, avoiding overly strong serves. Always coordinate well with your teammate, avoiding "stealing the ball" and creating unnecessary collisions. Your attire should also be carefully prepared, including athletic shoes with good grip and a suitable Padel racket.

With its outstanding advantages in entertainment, social benefits, and health advantages, Padel is gradually establishing its position in Vietnam. It is not just a passing trend but a breath of fresh air, bringing modern and exciting sporting experiences to the community.
