On December 20th, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh signed a decision approving the investment plan for the construction of Quang Tri Airport. Accordingly, the project will have a 50-year implementation period and a total investment of over 5,820 billion VND.

Quang Tri Airport is being built in three communes: Gio Quang, Gio Hai, and Gio Mai (Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province) to meet the increasing demand for air transport, contributing to the promotion of political, economic, and social development, while ensuring high mobility in defense, as well as in rescue and relief operations and national defense and security in the Central region.

The project is designed as a 4C-class airport and a Class II military airport, with a capacity to handle one million passengers and 3,100 tons of cargo per year.

The total projected investment is VND 5,822.9 billion, to be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 will focus on constructing basic facilities to meet the standards of a 4C-class airport and a Class II military airport; with a capacity to handle 2.2 million passengers per year by 2046 and 5,000 tons of cargo by 2042, with an investment of nearly VND 2,914 billion.

Phase 2 will involve investing in ground handling infrastructure at the airport in 2029; expanding the passenger terminal in 2047 to accommodate up to 5 million passengers. This phase will also include the expansion of the cargo terminal: Phase 1 in 2043 with an operating capacity of approximately 13,700 tons per year, and Phase 2 in 2059 with an operating capacity of approximately 25,500 tons per year. Government offices, aviation and non-aviation service facilities will also be constructed during this period. The investment capital for Phase 2 is over 2,909 billion VND.

The Quang Tri airport project will have a 50-year implementation period; and is expected to operate and collect fees to recover the investment within 47 years and 4 months.
