Introducing the Volkswagen Golf - A Timeless Legend

06/11/2025

On the afternoon of October 31st, the Saigon riverside park area was unusually bustling. Under the late autumn sky, cars bearing the "VW" logo gleamed in the late afternoon sun. In that open space, Volkswagen Vietnam introduced the Golf – a hatchback that has been considered the "heart" of the German brand for over half a century.

Instead of a traditional indoor launch, Volkswagen opted for an outdoor, intimate, and experiential setting, both to retell the old story and to begin a new journey for the Golf in Vietnam.

The eight-generation journey of the Volkswagen Golf

Six versions of the Golf appeared on the racetrack.

Launched in 1974, the Golf is not only Volkswagen's most successful model but also one of the most popular in the world, with over 37 million units sold globally. For 50 years, the Golf has held a special place: compact enough for urban environments, yet powerful and well-balanced in terms of driving performance and practicality.

In Vietnam, the Golf was previously only available through small-scale import channels. This time, Volkswagen Vietnam officially distributes six versions, divided into three groups:

  • The Golf 1.5 eTSI (Life, Style, R-Line) uses a 1.5L Mild Hybrid engine with 150 ps of power and a 7-speed DSG transmission, aiming for economical and smooth operation.
  • Golf GTI (Lite, Performance) – 2.0 TSI engine, 245 ps, sport brakes and IQ.Light Matrix LED lighting system.
  • The Golf R Performance 4Motion – the top-of-the-line version, with 320 ps, all-wheel drive, and equipped with DCC (Dynamic Control System) for chassis adjustment and Race driving mode.

The car is developed on the MQB Evo platform, which is the common platform for the eighth generation Golf, focusing on stable handling and driver experience.

From technique to emotion

In its new generation, the Golf not only retains its familiar style but also demonstrates a different direction for Volkswagen in Vietnam: incorporating electrification technology into its products, starting with the eTSI Mild Hybrid system.

The Golf GTI and Golf R maintain their traditional role: the brand's sporting icons. These versions offer rapid acceleration and responsive handling, yet are tightly controlled by the chassis and braking system. While the eTSI is suited to urban environments, the GTI and R are aimed at speed enthusiasts – those seeking the thrill of driving rather than just transportation.

Volkswagen doesn't call the Golf a "legend," but rather presents it as a model that has matured alongside its drivers. Its "timelessness" lies in how the Golf adapts to technology and consumer tastes while retaining the essence of the German hatchback: compact, refined, and precise.

The Golf launch took place within the framework of Volkswagen Experience Day - the first brand event organized by Volkswagen Vietnam. Beyond introducing new products, Experience Day also provided an opportunity for attendees to test drive the entire Volkswagen range, from Touareg, Teramont, Tiguan, Viloran to Golf.

On the spacious track, the test drives were designed to demonstrate handling and stability. In the demonstration area, the Golf GTI and Golf R Performance models performed a short drift, showcasing the power of the 2.0 TSI turbocharged engine and the control capabilities of the 4Motion system.

Beyond the technical aspects, the event also featured a small exhibition showcasing the history of Golf's development, and booths from partners such as Hi-Kool, VIB, Liberty, and Aerowash – brands that collaborate with Volkswagen in Vietnam. Visitors could meet goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang, who has been associated with Golf for over 15 years, and hear his personal story about his "life companion."

All of this created a relaxed, unpretentious event where car enthusiasts could experience, chat with, and observe how the German brand is present in Vietnam in a more intimate way.

Golf in a new context

Volkswagen's decision to bring back the Golf isn't just about expanding its product range. In the Vietnamese automotive market, where SUVs and electric vehicles dominate, the presence of a traditional hatchback is somewhat bold. The Golf represents a specific customer group – those who view driving as a personal pleasure, prioritizing agility in the city over size or ground clearance.

Volkswagen's Golf line has been developed into three main versions, from economy and sport to high-performance, demonstrating a strategy of product diversification on a single technical platform. While not focused on sales targets, the Golf holds an iconic position in the company's portfolio, affirming its commitment to maintaining traditional German engineering values in the context of globalization and electrification.
