By 2030, Con Dao Airport (Ba Ria - Vung Tau) will have a capacity of 2 million passengers and 4,400 tons of cargo per year.

On August 18th, representatives from the Ministry of Transport announced that the ministry had approved the revised master plan for Con Dao Airport until 2030. The airport will be for both military and civilian use, with a capacity of 2 million passengers and 4,400 tons of cargo per year. It will be able to handle Code C aircraft (Airbus A320, A321) or equivalent, and will have 8 aircraft parking positions.

To accommodate larger aircraft, the runway will be upgraded and expanded to 1,830 m x 45 m, with 7.5 m wide shoulders on each side; three taxiways will be constructed connecting the runway to the parallel taxiway and apron.

A new air traffic control tower has been built to the east of the passenger terminal. The airport is equipped with an automated runway intrusion warning system, multi-point monitoring, weather radar, bird detection and deterrence equipment, etc. The passenger terminal is planned to be newly constructed to accommodate two million passengers per year, with land reserved for future expansion to the east.

The total land requirement for Con Dao Airport is approximately 181 hectares, including 104 hectares of existing airport land and approximately 76 hectares of additional land. Of this, 32 hectares are reserved for future runway extensions when needed.

Con Dao Airport currently has a designed capacity of 500,000 passengers per year, and in recent years has achieved a growth rate of over 20%. In 2020, the airport handled 447,750 passengers, a 4% increase compared to 2019 despite the complex pandemic situation. Currently, Con Dao Airport can only handle small aircraft such as the ATR-72 and similar types, which limits the number of tourists and keeps ticket prices consistently high.
