The entire terminal – one of three at the country's largest and busiest airport – was evacuated and an investigation into the collapse has been launched. The incident caused the cancellation of at least 10 flights and delayed 40 others, with delays averaging around 50 minutes.

In addition to the incident at Indira Gandhi Airport, many other areas of the capital New Delhi were also flooded, causing severe traffic congestion and affecting metro services. Many residents also complained of power outages.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the Indira Gandhi Airport area recorded about 148.5mm of rain within three hours in the early morning of the same day, exceeding the average rainfall for the entire month of June. The entire city of 20 million people recorded 228.1mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m., 266% higher than normal.

The heavy rains followed a severe heatwave in New Delhi and other parts of India in recent days. Several other parts of the capital were also flooded, leaving many vehicles submerged. The metro system was also affected while traffic was disrupted in many places, and some areas suffered power outages.
