The Governor's Residence, also known as the Lord's Residence or the Provincial Governor's Residence, was built around the 19th century during the French colonial period. Initially, this residence served as the home and workplace of the island's rulers – those representing the colonial government in managing Con Dao Island. The architecture of the residence bears the strong imprint of the colonial era, harmoniously blending classical European style with traditional East Asian features.
The ancient architecture of the Governor's Residence
The lush green garden in front of the mansion provides a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere for the entire area.
This was also where prisoners had to perform hard labor.
The main building of the palace is constructed primarily from stone and wood, with functional rooms such as a living room, study, bedrooms, and kitchen. In front of the palace is a small garden, planted with lush greenery, creating an airy and peaceful atmosphere. Particularly, from the palace, visitors can gaze out at the vast ocean, feeling the tranquility yet also the majestic grandeur of the place.

The Office of the Island Lords
The Governor's Residence is not just a simple architectural structure, but also a place that has witnessed many historical stories. Throughout the resistance against the French and Americans, it served as the headquarters of the island governors, who directly managed the Con Dao prison system – where thousands of political prisoners were held.
Historical records show that the island rulers regularly held meetings and made important decisions regarding the suppression of prisoners and maintaining strict control over the island. However, it was also here that many prisoner uprisings broke out, contributing to shaking the foundations of the colonial regime on the island.
Tourists visiting the Palace
During a tour, we had the opportunity to chat with Mr. Hoang Minh, a tourist from Hanoi. He shared: "This is my first time visiting Con Dao and the Governor's Residence. Standing amidst this ancient space, I felt like I was transported back in time, imagining the years of our nation's tenacious struggle. The architecture of the residence is truly impressive; it retains its ancient beauty while still conveying a sense of solemnity."
Ms. Lan Phuong, a history enthusiast, also expressed: "The Governor's Palace is not only a place to visit but also a place for us to learn more about historical stories that few people know. Every little corner, every brick seems to tell a part of a tragic past."

The distinctive red tiled roof, with its appropriate slope, creates a lasting and harmonious beauty for the building.
The existence of the Governor's Residence stands as a vivid testament to the ancient beauty of Con Dao. This pearl island in the middle of the ocean is not only known for its stunning beaches, but also for preserving precious cultural and historical heritage. The Governor's Residence, with its ancient architecture and moving historical stories, contributes to making Con Dao even more mysterious and captivating.
