This year, Alex Dawson won the title of Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 with his work "Whales' Bones," a striking and profound photograph. In this image, Dawson successfully created a powerful picture that shows the devastation wrought by humans on the marine environment. The photograph depicts a free diver witnessing the devastation of whaling, while diving among the massive skeletons of whale carcasses left behind in Greenland.

With 6,500 underwater photographs submitted from around the world, Alex Dawson's victory is a testament to the talent and deep environmental awareness displayed in underwater photography.
The chairman of the judging panel, Dr. Alexander Mustard MBE, described the photograph as “a photograph taken in the most extreme conditions.” Since the rise of humans, wildlife populations have declined by 85%. Today, only 4% of mammals are wild, the remaining 96% are human and our pets.
