Underwater Photography is an annual competition held in the UK that celebrates the amazing images taken underwater, from the sea to lakes, ponds and even swimming pools. The competition features entries from all over the world, showcasing the power and diversity of underwater photography.
This year, Alex Dawson was named Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 with his powerful and poignant image, “Whale Bones.” Dawson manages to create a powerful image that shows the devastation humanity has caused to the marine environment. The photo depicts a free diver witnessing the devastation caused by whaling while diving among the giant skeletons of whales left behind in Greenland.
Alex Dawson's photo 'Whale Bones' won the title of Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024
With 6,500 underwater photographs submitted from around the world, Alex Dawson's win is a testament to the talent and deep environmental awareness in the art of underwater photography.
Chairman of the judging panel, Dr Alexander Mustard MBE, described the image as “a photograph taken under the most extreme conditions”. Since the rise of humans, wildlife numbers have declined by 85%. Today, only 4% of mammals are wild, the remaining 96% are humans and our pets.
