The 2019 LGBTQ+ Danger Index is a comprehensive survey ranking the safest and least safe countries for travelers in general and LGBTQ+ travelers in particular.
This special ranking was compiled by Asher & Lyric – a website promoting health and safety advice for international travelers. The list is based on several factors, including: legalization of same-sex marriage, protection of the LGBTQ+ community, anti-discrimination laws, criminalization of crimes, and recognition of adoption rights, among others.
Asher & Lyric's ranking
According to the index, Sweden is currently the most LGBTQ+ friendly country in the world, with a total of 322 points, topping the list. Canada ranks second with a total of 309 points, followed by Norway (307), Portugal (306) and Belgium (301). Vietnam also appears on this list at position 72 out of 150 countries with 30 points.

Sweden's top position is not surprising, as it was the first country in the world to legally allow individuals to change their gender in 1972. By 2009, Sweden had become the seventh country worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage.
The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) – an online network of hotels, transport, travel councils, travel companies, and tour operators in over 80 countries worldwide – also considers Sweden one of the best countries for LGBTQ+ travelers.

To date, 27 countries have enacted marriage equality rights for the LGBTQ+ community, and 11 countries provide civil unions to protect this community.
Countries with marriage equality laws are often great destinations for LGBTQ+ vacations; however, the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association still advises members of this community to do thorough research before choosing a destination to ensure a safe and happy vacation.
