Based on health and travel security risks – including infectious diseases and political violence – the map is divided into five categories, ranging from “negligible risk” to “extreme risk”.
According to predictions for 2020, the safest destinations are heavily concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere: Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

The destinations considered most dangerous are scattered across the globe and include Afghanistan, the Central African Republic (CAR), Somalia and Syria.
Some countries are given mixed ratings, like Mexico and Colombia – some areas are medium risk, while others are high risk.

A spokesperson for International SOS said the map was designed to serve customers, but while "the map reflects the overall risk level of countries, travelers should still carefully research their destination before departure."
Overall, International SOS ranks the UK, US, Canada, Australia, China and most of Europe as low risk, while most African countries are considered medium or high risk.
