Recently, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, topped a survey by the holiday search website holiday.co.uk on the best cities for work-life balance.
Copenhagen residents enjoy more leisure time and work fewer hours on average each year compared to most other cities in the world.
Copenhagen ranks first with the lowest average annual working hours. Most people there work only 1,380 hours per year, compared to Singapore, where people work an average of 2,330 hours annually.
Furthermore, Copenhagen also scored highly on happiness and well-being, with an overall score of 8 out of 10 in the index. Residents of the Scandi capital also get enough rest, with an average of nearly 9 hours of sleep per night, just one step lower than the average in Portugal.
Overall, European cities achieved high work-life balance scores, occupying the top 32 positions. This ranking is based on various factors such as: working hours, commuting time, paid vacations, average sleep hours per night, annual travel, happiness levels, and personal income.
In the UK, Edinburgh is considered to offer the best work-life balance thanks to its high disposable income score. Furthermore, Edinburgh ranks among the most livable cities in the UK for expats. Meanwhile, Adelaide, Australia, is the highest-ranked city outside of Europe, coming in at 33rd place on the list.
Leading the UK, Edinburgh in Scotland ranks 40th thanks to its high disposable income score.
Neighboring Glasgow is the second highest-ranked city in the UK at 41st place, while Manchester, Liverpool and London also made it into the top 50.
In Canada, Edmonton leads the ranking at 51st place. Meanwhile, in the US, Las Vegas tops the list for states at 71st place.
Hong Kong residents travel the most trips annually, averaging 12 trips.
Peruvian cities rank highest for the number of paid annual leave days with 42 days per year, while Zurich residents have the highest disposable income in the world.
Klagenfurt in Austria has the shortest commute time of any city, at just 9 minutes. In contrast, San Jose, a city in Costa Rica, has a daily commute time of over an hour.
Residents in cities across Peru have the highest number of paid vacation days.
And when it comes to travel, Hong Kong takes the top spot. Despite its low overall ranking, this Asian city has residents who travel an average of 12 times a year.
Middle Eastern countries were largely absent from the survey results. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Beirut, and Kuwait were initially included but were later removed due to the inability to fully verify the data for each location.
