Vietnam prepares to celebrate "World Tapa Day"

17/06/2019

In 2019, for the first time in Vietnam, there will be "World Tapa Day". In Ho Chi Minh City alone, from June 20 to 23, 10 Spanish and Mediterranean restaurants will prepare special Tapa dishes for this event.

The Spanish are famous for their passion for food. And they are especially proud to share this passion with others, because for the Spanish, food is not an experience if it is not shared with friends. Therefore, "World Tapa Day" is a precious opportunity for the Spanish to share with their Vietnamese friends a small slice of Spanish culinary culture through an interesting cultural event.

What is a Tapa? Tapas, or "dish" in English, are small portions of food served with drinks. In Spain, when you order a drink at a bar, they will treat you to a small tapa to eat with it. Legend has it that King Alfonso X in the 13th century started this tradition when he ordered all bars to serve wine with a small piece of food to avoid getting drunk. So, bars started serving wine with a slice of bread covered with ham or cheese and placed on the rim of the wine glass as a lid. And that's how Tapas was born.

The tradition still lives on today. Going out for tapas or visiting bars and restaurants is a favorite pastime for Spanish families and groups.

On the occasion of "World Tapa Day", Spanish and Mediterranean restaurants will apply the program "A glass of wine, a tapa" with preferential prices for diners along with many attractive gifts. Within the framework of this important cultural event, online competitions such as: "Tapa recipe video", "Most unique tapa photo" and solving online quizzes about Spanish cuisine will also be held.

In Ho Chi Minh City only, you can pick up your Spanish Tapa passport at any of the participating restaurants, including: Fresh Catch Vietnam, Gaudi Tapas & Bar, Mekong Merchant Saigon, Lubu, Olé Saigon Restaurant, Ria Sangría & Tapas, Shri Restaurant & Lounge, Tapas Kitchen Caravelle, Tomatito Saigon and Octo Tapas Restobar. What’s more, each time you take a tapa at a different restaurant, you will receive a stamp. Those who complete the stamp page with the stamps of the 10 participating restaurants will be entered into a draw to win a plane ticket to Madrid or Barcelona (Spain).
