On the morning of September 5, 2019, VNA General Director Duong Tri Thanh said that the US Department of Transportation has just granted a license to transport passengers, cargo, and mail by air from Vietnam to the US to VNA. This is the first and only Vietnamese airline to receive this license from the US.
Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines will be allowed to operate flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to several cities in the US such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle and Dallas-Fort Worth via stops in Taipei and Nagoya, Osaka (Japan). In addition, VNA can also continue to fly from the US to other cities in Canada such as Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.

This license is an important step in establishing direct flights to the US by VNA after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded Vietnam a Category 1 (CAT 1) aviation safety supervision certificate earlier this year.
