Vietnam Airlines (VNA), the national airline of Vietnam, has officially received permission from the US Department of Transportation to operate direct flights from Vietnam to the United States.

On the morning of September 5, 2019, VNA General Director Duong Tri Thanh announced that the US Department of Transportation had granted VNA permission to transport passengers, cargo, and mail by air from Vietnam to the United States. This is the first and only Vietnamese airline to receive this permit from the US.

Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines will be permitted to operate flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to several US cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Dallas-Fort Worth via stopovers in Taipei and Nagoya, Osaka (Japan). In addition, VNA can also continue flights from the US to other Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto.

This license is a significant step in establishing direct flights to the US for VNA, following the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granting Vietnam Category 1 (CAT 1) aviation safety oversight accreditation earlier this year.
