From August 1st, Vietnam Airlines will switch to a baggage policy based on the number of pieces instead of weight on domestic and international flights. Under the new policy, passenger baggage will be calculated by the "number of pieces" instead of weight as before. This is an important change that passengers need to be aware of when preparing their luggage. Passengers who purchased tickets before the effective date of the new baggage policy will still be entitled to the baggage allowance based on weight as before.

Accordingly, Economy class passengers are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage including accessories with a total weight of up to 12 kg (previously one piece of 7 kg), while Premium Economy and Business class passengers are allowed two pieces of carry-on baggage including accessories with a total weight of up to 18 kg (previously two pieces of 7 kg each). For checked baggage, Economy class passengers are allowed one piece of 23 kg on domestic flights within Vietnam, Northeast Asia, Europe, and Australia, and two pieces of 23 kg on flights to Japan and the Americas.
Business class passengers will enjoy a free baggage allowance of one 32 kg bag on domestic flights within Vietnam and Southeast Asia, and up to two 32 kg bags on flights to Northeast Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas.
Premium Economy passengers are entitled to two pieces of baggage weighing 23 kg each on routes to Northeast Asia, Western Europe, Australia, and the Americas. On the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route, Premium Economy passengers have the same allowance as Business Class: one piece of baggage weighing 32 kg.

According to Vietnam Airlines, passengers who purchased tickets before the baggage allowance policy based on the number of pieces came into effect will still be entitled to the baggage allowance based on weight as before.
Specifically, customers purchasing economy class tickets departing from or arriving in Europe and Australia between August 1st and December 31st, 2019, will receive an additional 23 kg of free checked baggage. Also, to meet the increased baggage needs of customers, Vietnam Airlines will adjust and reduce the prices of excess baggage and prepaid baggage by up to 50% compared to current rates.
Additional information:
The piece-based baggage policy is a regulation widely applied by many international airlines worldwide, such as Air France, Aeroflot, British Airways, Lufthansa, All Nippon Airways, Korean Air, etc.
The airline stated that the switch to a piece-based baggage system will align Vietnam Airlines' policy with that of major airlines, thereby facilitating connecting flights for passengers on other carriers. Furthermore, planning and preparing baggage by piece also helps passengers travel more efficiently and conveniently on each trip.
